The month of March is usually about college basketball, but at K. Smith it has been a month of READING.
We began our Reading March Madness with a bracket of the top thirty-six series at our school (according to the local expert - Mrs. Voge).
Then day after day students in each classroom voted for the favorite – Stick Dog versus The Spiderwick Chronicles or Franny K. Stein versus Percy Jackson. And one by one a book series fell.
After a few weeks we were down to the Elite 8:
- Captain Underpants
- Harry Potter
- Dog Man
- Dork Diaries
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid
- Fly Guy
- Bad Kitty
With this list we have a little for everyone. Choices for early readers like Fly Guy or Bad Kitty. Choices for our advanced readers like Harry Potter. And, choices for our reluctant readers like Dog Man or Captain Underpants. And, what we have is a list of books that our students love. To become a great reader, a love of reading is essential. The best part of these choices is that they are series. Lots to enjoy for each title!
As we moved into the Final 4 this week we saw two really fun match-ups. First Bad Kitty lost to the ever-popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Then we saw a challenge that pitted two book series from the same author with Dog Man defeating Captain Underpants.
This set up the championship with Diary of a Wimpy Kid against Dog Man. The voting was tight, but a winner emerged ......and it was ..... OUR STUDENTS.
A love of reading and books has swept across the campus. Now it's time to carry that momentum into your home. Here are some ideas:
- Establish a quiet place to read
- Create an extra time to read for fun
- Never skip reading (at least 20 min)
- Read together as a family
For the #Best KSmithBook? Well, that will be announced at Morning Pride after Spring Break. The winners of the bracket challenge will also be announced.
