Black History Month grew out of "Negro History Week," the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history. We are highlighting the struggle and triumph of African Americans through classroom lessons and activities, read alouds and a school-wide assembly on Feb. 25th.

Every Wednesday is Walk n' Roll to School Day for students. Laurelwood families are encouraged to walk, bike and roll to school each Wednesday to promote daily physical activity, reduce traffic congestion around Laurelwood and learn critical skills that enhance biking and pedestrian safety. PTA would like to say a big "THANK YOU" to all of the Students, Parents, and Teachers who took part in helping to make the Lunar New Year Assembly a great success! It was an amazing assembly filled with Lion Dancers, Chinese Magician, Chinese folk dance, and a Vietnamese Hat Dance.
